Stille Nacht 01:14

about

Recorded at St. Paul's Memorial Church on December 7, 1990 and at Old Cabell Hall at the University of Virginia on December 8, 1990, this recording presents a live performance of the Virginia Glee Club in its 120th anniversary year, and during the 50th Anniversary of the Glee Club's Christmas concerts, which have been a feature of Charlottesville holiday life since 1941.

Originally issued on cassette as VA-9070, this recording was the first Glee Club recording offered for sale since "A Shadow's on the Sundial" in 1972. It was also the first recording released by the Glee Club after becoming an independent organization, following many years of sponsorship by the McIntire Department of Music at the University.

The repertoire features a range of seasonal music for men's voices, but there are a few tracks that deserve a particular call-out. The Franz Biebl "Ave Maria" had been introduced to the Virginia Glee Club at the Harvard Festival of Men's Voices in 1977 and received its first solo performance by the Virginia group in Soissons, France later that year, and had by this time become a traditional part of the Glee Club Christmas concert. This recording marks its recorded debut by the Glee Club. Donald Loach's iconic and sensitive arrangement of "Stille Nacht" has been a staple of the Club's Christmas performances for many years, as has the appearance of the Virginia Gentlemen singing lighter music for the season.

This recording is receiving its first-ever digital reissue in 2022 as part of the belated 150th anniversary celebration of the Virginia Glee Club, which was founded in 1871 at the University of Virginia. The recording was sourced from the original cassette tape and transferred to lossless digital using Dolby B noise reduction. The resulting digital files were amplified but otherwise unaltered, allowing you to hear the original audio—including such traditional “live-in-concert” features as someone dropping a book and more than a few early applauders—as it sounded on the original 31-plus-year-old cassette.
