about

Recorded at Old Cabell Hall on December 7, 1991, this recording captures the Virginia Glee Club's annual Christmas concert in its first year of performance with John Liepold as conductor. Virginia Glee Club Christmas concerts have been a feature of Charlottesville holiday life since 1941.The recording was originally released on cassette without a catalog number, but was retroactively given the number VGC0002 following the release of "Music for a Noble Acoustic."

The repertoire for this performance includes a trio of settings of the "O Magnum Mysterium" and works by Maurice Duruflé, including the Deux Motets and the Messe "Cum Jubilo" accompanied by a full orchestra. Organist Yvaine Duisit studied with Duruflé and told the students stories about working with the great composer and his wife during the preparation of the concert.

The concert also features the first modern Glee Club performance of "The Winter Song," which has since become a standard of the Glee Club's performance, as well as special appearances by the Virginia Gentlemen.

This recording is receiving its first-ever digital reissue in 2022 as part of the belated 150th anniversary celebration of the Virginia Glee Club, which was founded in 1871 at the University of Virginia. The recording was sourced from the original cassette tape and transferred to lossless digital using Dolby B noise reduction. The resulting digital files were amplified but otherwise unaltered, allowing you to hear the original audio—including such traditional “live-in-concert” features as rustling, coughs, and more than a few early applauders—as it sounded on the original 30-plus-year-old cassette.
