about

"A Dove in the Hall" was recorded live in concert on the 1992 Tour of the South, in Holy Name Church at Loyola University in New Orleans on March 17, 1992, under the direction of John Liepold. The recording features the tour repertoire, including Glee Club favorites such as Maurice Duruflé's immortal "Ubi Caritas," John Dowland's "Come Again, Sweet Love," and the touring premieres of James Erb's "Shenandoah" and Benjamin Brœning's "Come, Heavy Sleep." This recording was originally released in 1994 as VGC-0004.

During the second half of the performance, which featured some of the Club's louder numbers, the astonishing reverberation in the chapel — easily six seconds — became apparent. These performances feature Liepold adjusting tempi, adding pauses, and otherwise responding to the magnificent sound created when the hall reflected the Glee Club's voices back on themselves. This is especially apparent in "Soon-Ah Will Be Done."

The performance also captures some of the ambience of the Glee Club's movement during the performance, including both the processional past the microphones in the audience on "Alle, psallite cum luja" and the sounds of folders being dropped to the ground prior to the performance of "The Good Old Song."

This recording is receiving its first-ever digital reissue in 2022 as part of the belated 150th anniversary celebration of the Virginia Glee Club, which was founded in 1871 at the University of Virginia. The recording was sourced from the original cassette tape and transferred to lossless digital using Dolby B noise reduction. The resulting digital files were amplified but otherwise unaltered, allowing you to hear the original audio—including such traditional “live-in-concert” features as footsteps and early applauders—as it sounded on the original 28-year-old cassette.
