about

Recorded in 1971 and early 1972, "A Shadow's on the Sundial" was the first recording that the Virginia Glee Club offered for commercial sale in 20 years. Created as a fundraiser to support the Glee Club's first ever international tour of Europe, the recording features a combination of traditional University repertoire, signature Glee Club pieces including the title suite, and a set of Renaissance and 20th century repertoire that represent a good cross-section of the Glee Club's repertoire under the direction of Donald Loach.

Of the Glee Club associated repertoire on this recording, "A Shadow's on the Sundial" is a suite of songs composed by former Virginia Glee Club director David Davis, based on poems by former Glee Club president Michael Stillman, with lyrical themes ranging from nonsense to aging and mortality.

"The Testament of Freedom" was composed by Randall Thompson in 1943 for the Virginia Glee Club while he was head of the Music Department at the University, as well as serving as the Club's interim director. Its texts, drawn from Jefferson's writings, speak to the wartime concerns of the Virginia students at the time, many of whom were enrolled in officer candidate programs prior to shipping off to serve in World War II. This recording features the first and last movements of the work, which focus on the themes of liberty and the rights of man.

This recording is receiving a digital reissue in 2022 as part of the belated 150th anniversary celebration of the Virginia Glee Club, which was founded in 1871 at the University of Virginia. The recording was sourced from the original vinyl LP and transferred to lossless digital. The resulting digital files were amplified but otherwise unaltered, allowing you to hear the performances as they sounded on the original album.
