about

"Songs of the University of Virginia" was the Virginia Glee Club's first ever album release. Recorded in 1950-1951 and featuring performances by the University of Virginia Band, the record is the earliest recorded document of many UVA songs.

The album was recorded live in Old Cabell Hall, with the Glee Club directed by Stephen Tuttle and the band conducted by future Glee Club conductor Donald MacInnis. The repertoire ranges from traditional Virginia songs to slightly more obscure songs of Virginia's "ribbon societies," Eli Banana and T.I.L.K.A., to a recording of Daniel Purcell's setting of Psalm 15 (known as "Thomas Jefferson's favorite psalm").

The album saw a variety of releases over the years. The original 1951 release was a true album of three 78RPM records (RCA Victor 81952). This was followed in the early 1950s by a 10" 33 1/3 RPM release (RPC E2-KL-5311/2), and then sometime in the early 1960s by a 12" 33 1/3 RPM release (RPC 81952). All releases had the same tracks, though the sequence differs between the 78RPM version and other editions. This release uses the track sequence from the 33 1/3 editions.

This recording is receiving a digital reissue in 2022 as part of the belated 150th anniversary celebration of the Virginia Glee Club, which was founded in 1871 at the University of Virginia. The recording was sourced from the original vinyl LP and transferred to lossless digital. The resulting digital files were amplified but otherwise unaltered, allowing you to hear the performances as they sounded on the original album.
