about

Recorded at River Road Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia on January 24, 1993, this recording (originally issued on cassette tape as VGC-0003) finds the Virginia Glee Club performing music from its 1992-1993 season, including commissioned works by Benjamin Broening and Glee Club member Nathan Moore. In the 1992-1993 season, the Virginia Glee Club, under the direction of John Liepold, would also perform on the Today Show at Monticello and at the Jefferson Memorial in front of President and Mrs. Clinton, both in celebration of Thomas Jefferson’s 250th birthday.

The performance features three works commissioned by the Glee Club. Benjamin Broening's setting of "When David Heard" received its premiere in 1992, as did Nathan Moore's "Ave Maria." The arrangement of "Shenandoah" for TTBBB heard here was arranged for the Glee Club in 1991 by James Erb, based on his earlier 8-part setting for mixed chorus, and is one of the Glee Club's signature songs.

This recording is receiving its first-ever digital reissue in 2022 as part of the belated 150th anniversary celebration of the Virginia Glee Club, which was founded in 1871 at the University of Virginia. The recording was sourced from the original cassette tape and transferred to lossless digital using Dolby B noise reduction. The resulting digital files were amplified but otherwise unaltered, allowing you to hear the original audio—including such traditional “live-in-concert” features as someone dropping a book and more than a few early applauders—as it sounded on the original 29-year-old cassette.
