about

The fall of 1992 saw the Virginia Glee Club, under the direction of John Liepold, on tour to Smith and Holyoke. The concert at Smith College featured a tour set from the Virginia Glee Club, a set from the Smith College Glee Club, and a collaboration—a performance of "Chichester Psalms" by the combined clubs. The present Bandcamp release only contains the Virginia Glee Club set.

The set contained the Glee Club's core repertoire for the fall, the so-called "David set," featuring settings of the lamentation of King David over the death of his son Absalom by Josquin, Thomas Tomkins, William Billings, and a newly commissioned setting by Benjamin Broening. The set also contains the only known recording of the Glee Club's performance of "Time Piece," a wild work originally commissioned for the King's Singers and featuring vocal effects, a rhythmic fugue of ticking clocks, utter cacophony, and Glee Club member Brett Posten as the voice of God. The set concludes with three works drawn from American songs, including the Glee Club's signature version of "Shenandoah."

This recording is receiving its first-ever digital reissue in 2022 as part of the belated 150th anniversary celebration of the Virginia Glee Club, which was founded in 1871 at the University of Virginia. The recording was sourced from the original cassette tape and transferred to lossless digital using Dolby B noise reduction. The resulting digital files were amplified but otherwise unaltered, allowing you to hear the original audio as it sounded on the 30-year-old cassette. This recording is reproduced and made available for sale courtesy of the Smith College Glee Club, who recorded the original concert.
