about

This recording features the Virginia Glee Club in the early years of Donald Loach's tenure as conductor with material drawn from two different 1968 concerts. The fall concert features a combination of American and Renaissance works, while the Christmas concert includes a performance of the "Gloria" from the Missa Mater Patris of Josquin.

John Crawford's "Here is the god who looks both ways" was performed a number of times by the Glee Club in the late 1960s and 1970s; here it makes its first appearance, along with "Thy word is a lantern," which was originally written for the Yale Glee Club in 1965 by Fenno Heath. Heath's "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child" was performed only three times by the Glee Club under Donald Loach before returning to the repertoire in the 1994-1995 season.

This recording was never widely issued, making it something of a rarity compared to later Glee Club albums such as "A Shadow's on the Sundial." It appears to have been pressed in small quantities for the members of the group and for study purposes.

This recording is receiving its first-ever digital reissue in 2022 as part of the belated 150th anniversary celebration of the Virginia Glee Club, which was founded in 1871 at the University of Virginia. The recording was sourced from vinyl LP and transferred to lossless digital. The resulting digital files were amplified but otherwise unaltered, allowing you to hear the original audio—including such traditional “live-in-concert” features as rustling and coughs as well as a few vinyl noises—as it sounded on the original 50-plus-year-old album.
