about

This recording documents the Virginia Glee Club in the mid-1950s under the direction of Donald MacInnis. A three-song 7" EP that was labeled for promotional release, the record includes both classical repertoire (Bach's "Gott, wie gross, ist deine Gutt") and choral renditions of popular songs. The version of Tom Lehrer's "The Hunting Song" is noteworthy as an early adaptation of Lehrer's 1953 parody. This EP is the only known recording of the Glee Club during this period, and is one of the oldest known recordings of the Virginia Glee Club.

This recording is receiving a digital reissue in 2022 as part of the belated 150th anniversary celebration of the Virginia Glee Club, which was founded in 1871 at the University of Virginia. The recording was sourced from the original vinyl record and transferred to lossless digital. The resulting digital files were amplified but otherwise unaltered, allowing you to hear the performances as they sounded on the original album.
